FREE Home Security Tips

Recent burglaries of celebrity homes definitely have the elite asking how safe their homes are, but what about those of us who don’t live in mansions? Are our homes safe? As security experts, AEGIS Security & Investigations promotes preventative action rather than reaction.

While the national rate of burglary has seen a slight decrease per the FBI, the Los Angeles area isn’t quite as lucky. Our property crime rate has remained fairly stagnant since 2014. You can see your local crime data here.

Luckily, there’s a lot you can do for free and at a low cost to help protect your home. For a start, you can make small upgrades to the way you live. When you’re in the home alone, check that all doors and points of entries are secured. If you’re expecting someone, ask that they knock, ring the bell, or call or text you that they’re at the door. When you’re planning to leave the house for the day, check that those same entrances are locked. If you’re going on a trip, ask someone to stop in at your residence, leave a car parked in the driveway when possible, and set lights to come on in the evening to deter scouting burglars.

For those who prefer to use technology, you can download various applications to an old cellphone and link it to your current phone to have live video and audio surveillance of your home. Jeff Zisner, President of AEGIS, showcased this on an NBC segment. The biggest advantage of using an old phone as a surveillance camera is that you don’t have to buy a fancy (and expensive) package from a high-tech company. Plus, the pennies on the dollar you were going to make back on that phone are put to better use by actually utilizing the device for a longer period of time.

LAPD offers numerous tips on preventing home burglaries that can be found on their website. We recommend looking to your local public safety officials for further assistance in preventing burglary. You may also consider starting a neighborhood watch council. Don’t wait to find out how safe your residence is — protect your home today.

For those who require a higher level of planning and consultation, AEGIS provides broad spectrum home security consulting services.
